Today in Abuja, representatives from the Embassy of Ireland Nigeria met with the Ugwumba Center for Leadership Development in Africa to discuss the work of the Centre which includes the implementation of its community development and job creation programs for the youths.
Speaking at the meeting, the President of the Center, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu thanked the Charge d’Affaires, Mr. Ronan Mullin and Second Secretary, Mr. Conor Finn for the opportunity given to him and his team.
He informed that the Center has supported the birth of over 5,000 SMEs and startups in Nigeria through the annual Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge since inception in 2018. According to him, “the annual challenge brings together and trains young people between 18 and 30 years who have ideas that can be transformed into profitable business ventures.”
Mr. Uche Nwosu thereafter called for the support of the Embassy to enable the Center expand the scope of the project, to ensure that more youths and women with innovative ideas from across the country are identified and equipped with entrepreneurship skills and funding they need to grow their startups and small businesses.
Earlier in his introduction speech, the Executive Director of the Center, Remy Chukwunyere informed that the mission of the Center is to raise a new generation of young leaders and entrepreneurs for Africa. According to him, “we try to achieve the above mandate by designing and implementing programs in three focal areas, namely: leadership development; enterprise development and community development.”
He thereafter announced that their signature projects: Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge; Rebrand Nigeria Campaign; Ugwumba Rural HealthCare Program and the Ugwumba Women Academy are gradually changing the ways of lives of Nigerians, especially the youths and women.
Responding, Mr Mullin said there was potential for collaboration between the Embassy and the Centre, especially in the “Rebrand Nigeria” campaign. According to him, with a large and vibrant #Nigerian diaspora community in #Ireland, there are many great examples of persons of Nigerian background, who are making a positive contribution to Irish society.
