So, next week, we shall focus our conversation on how young entrepreneurs can succeed in Nigeria and our guest is one of the most celebrated young entrepreneurs in Nigeria, Chidinma Emodi Chukwuemeka, the Co-Founder of The Footwear Academy, Aba.
The Footwear Academy is a company co-founded by Chidinma to foster socio-economic growth and to reduce youth unemployment in Nigeria through shoe making.
She learnt shoemaking at Accademia Riaci, Florence, Italy with her husband and co-founder and they have since used their work at The Footwear Academy to improve the lives of shoemakers in Nigeria by enabling them produce export standard footwear products through training, job matching opportunities and access to quality and affordable raw materials.
Her Startup emerged winner of the 2021 National MSME Award for Excellence in Leatherworks and were rewarded with a brand-new car and a cash prize of N1 million by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
In 2020, The Footwear Academy trained over 140 youths in shoemaking in Abia and Anambra States and now boasts of a total alumni strength of over 250 shoemakers who are currently exporting shoes outside the shores of Nigeria.
Chidinma is an Edmund Hillary Cohort 8 Fellow and a seasoned entrepreneur and has received several awards, prizes and grants. Noteworthy among her numerous awards are being named as “Her- Network Start-Up Woman of the Year 2019” and for receiving the “Star of Business and Entrepreneurship Award” at the YALI West Africa Nigeria Cohort 4.
Her startup “The Footwear Academy” has pitched and participated in various local and international startup competitions. The academy won the recent Proudly Made in Aba Hackathon with a grant prize of $50,000 from the Ford Foundation. The academy also came 2nd place at the Open Mic Africa Startup Pitch competition organized by Techpreneur Africa and MIT Legatum in 2017.
In 2020, they won N1m grant at the March 8th Initiative by Friends of Prof. She is a recipient of the South-West Nigeria Excellence Awards in recognition of her contributions to youth and economic empowerment in South West region of Nigeria.
She is a pioneer member and one of the administrators of “The Young Enterprising Women in Africa network (YEWA)”, a nonprofit group working towards empowering women entrepreneurs in Africa.
