Amputee lady hawker receives startup grant from Ugwumba Leadership Center

Today, #Sunday, April 11, 2021, in furtherance of its youth and women empowerment programs across the country, the Ugwumba Leadership Center has responded to the clarion call by Nigerians to support and establish Miss Mary Daniel, the amputee who hawks pure water in Oshodi Market in Lagos.

Few days ago, the story of one Miss Mary Daniel, an amputee who hawks pure water went viral on social media. Her story became a topical issue across the country and possibly among Nigerians around the globe, following her guts and audacity for survival, despite all the reasons she had to sit in one corner as a beggar.

Yesterday, the news of this lady in urgent need got to the Center and this morning, fueled by his milk of human kindness and compassion for humanity, the President of the Center, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu flew from Abuja to Lagos to meet with the lady who was the only survivor of a fatal motor accident that took the lives of her parents when she was only 11 years old.

From the reports available to us, 26 year old Mary who hails from Anyigba LGA of Kogi State lives in the open market somewhere in Oshodi with her 2 years old baby. Therefore, she hawks pure water in the popular Oshodi market in Lagos to be able to survive and cater for her baby.

After a breakfast meeting with her this morning, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, the President of the Ugwumba Leadership Center adopted her as an #UgwumbaFellow and thereafter handed over a startup grant of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) which was made up to one million naira (N1,000,000) with donations from our partners and fans, including Prince Ben Odunze, Bar. Steve Asimobi and Engr. Aham Rochas to enable her set up a grocery store as she had requested during the conversation with her.

Speaking to news men, the over excited Ugwumba Uche Nwosu said, “I have never been happy before as I am today, after meeting this young lady. I feel fulfilled being able to support this homeless lady and her family. I wish we can reach out to more less privileged Nigerians, who genuinely need support.”

He thereafter, called on all Ugwumba partners and fans around the world to look within their communities and societies and reach out to all those who genuinely need help, for according to him… “you experience more joy when you give than when you receive.”
