The solution to youth unemployment in Nigeria

The story of the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge is an amazing story of “Hope for the youths.”

No doubt, we have seen youth empowerment programs from the government and private organizations shoot out from every corner but the questions on our minds were…

What impacts have they made over the years? How many jobs have been created with all these programs? How can we begin to translate these millions and billions of investments into jobs, SMEs and an improved economy?

In 2017, we began a study of how to innovate these programs to enable them achieve their expected results. In 2019, the Ugwumba Center for Leadership Development in Africa launched the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge, with a model that makes it highly competitive, educative and empowering for all youths participating in the program.

The model was first experimented in Owerri, Imo State in May, 2019. The feedback from the participants, our partners and Resource persons attested to the success of the model and the project.

On August 31, 2019, we again experimented the same model at the national level. This time, the impact was massive and glaring for everyone, including representatives of the major actors in the ecosystem from the public and private sectors.

The success stories from participants of the Ugwumba Enterprise Challenge are evidences of a well thought out model designed to reduce unemployment by enabling young people get involved in self employment and enterprise development.

Between 2019 and 2020, we have supported the birthing of over 2,000 SMEs and innovations across the country. This year, with over 500 young Nigerians, who are participating in the 2020 edition of this challenge, we are sure of creating additional 1000 jobs for youths in this country as each SME and startup has the capacity to employ at least one youth.

Ladies and gentlemen, join us as we celebrate a model that shall bring the long awaited solution to the unemployment crisis ravaging the youth population in Nigeria and Africa, as a whole.
